Buy the roadmap, not the hardware
How health-system and payer leaders should think about quantum investment before the technology is production-ready.
The single most common mistake I see is treating quantum as a procurement decision — as if the goal is to acquire a machine. For nearly every healthcare organization, that framing is wrong today. The asset worth investing in is not hardware; it is a defensible roadmap.
What a roadmap actually contains
- A ranked list of your problems by quantum-suitability and business value.
- An honest read on which are better solved classically — most of them.
- A data-readiness assessment for the few that are genuinely promising.
- A sequence of low-risk proofs of concept with clear success criteria.
This is deliberately unglamorous. But it is what protects a budget line from becoming a stranded asset, and it is what lets you move fast the moment a vendor's capability crosses the threshold where it beats your classical baseline.
Vendor-neutral guidance is worth more than any single platform, because the right answer is often 'not yet — and here's what to watch.'
